# **Crowdsource Our Wisdom to Achieve Resilient Homes** ## **Make our Homes Resilient** ### Together we, the crowd, can teach and learn from each other. We are a community of people who can generate wisdom on how to make our homes more resilient in the face of extreme weather events, emergencies, planned blackouts and the possible breakdown of utility services. ## **Share your story and wisdom** * Join our community and create your profile. * Create you own wiki page to describe your projects (you must first enable the wiki module for your profile). * Create your own galleries and share images and videos (you must first enable the gallery module for your profile). * Post interesting news and join the discussions on the different spaces. Prepared to be self-sufficient for two weeks during any emergency. 2. Able to provide emergency assistance to their family and immediate neighbors. 3. Able to work within an emergency response team to save lives and property in their neighborhood. 4. Able to guide untrained volunteers who want to help others during a disaster. ## **Climate Disasters** Wildfires, Extreme Heat, Snow & Ice Storms, Earthquakes, Tornados, Hurricanes, and Flooding are disasters that can disrupt utility services. In the richer communities electricity is becoming more and more important in our lives, but we still depend on natural gas, water, sewage and the internet. \ \ ![](file-guid:59fd402c-223a-4f14-95e8-f4ce421acfcd "image.png" =x300) [“Drought, floods, freezing temperatures, severe storms, tropical cyclones, wildfires, winter storms… these weather and climate disasters have claimed countless lives and caused billions of dollars in damages in the United States." Below is a map of the United States, but this is a problem many face throughout the world. We can learn from each other and share knowledge of how to prepare, and where to get help such as contractors and other resources to call upon. ![](file-guid:2d91497e-6b99-4201-a175-97cc76dc78e1 "image.png" =x300) #### The average cost per event by disaster types are the following: [Tropical cyclones have the highest average cost per event of $20.3 billion.\ Drought/heat waves have an average cost of $10.0 billion per event. \ Wildfires have an average cost of $6.2 billion per event. \ Flooding events have an average cost of $4.7 billion per event. \ Winter storms have an average cost of $4.1 billion per event. \ Freezes have an average cost of $3.7 billion per event. \ Severe storms have an average cost of $2.3 billion per event, but are the most frequent disaster type.](https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/news/calculating-cost-weather-and-climate-disasters)\ \ ![](file-guid:b59a6bcc-1b49-4d05-938a-e5b6b12cd6f3 "image.png" =x300)
